Nature of work
The employment of a psychoeducator or psychoeducator more specifically includes functions of prevention, screening, help, support and assessment of the difficulties of adaptation and adaptive abilities of students who present or are likely to present difficulties of adaptation, as well as determination of a psychoeducational intervention plan and its implementation, in order to create the conditions favorable to the optimal adaptation of the pupil, to the reestablishment and the development of his adaptive capacity and its autonomy, interacting with its environment. She or he assumes a role of advice and support for school workers and parents.
Some characteristic assignments
The psychoeducator or psychoeducator participates in the development and implementation of the psychoeducation service while respecting the educational and administrative frameworks, both at the level of the institutions and the school board.
She or he contributes to the screening and recognition of students with difficulties, with a view to prevention and intervention; he or she plans and makes an assessment of the adjustment difficulties and adaptive abilities of students, particularly students with handicaps or social maladjustments, and pupils with a mental or neuropsychological disorder attested by a diagnosis or assessment by a professional resource authorized to do so, in order to specify the student's functioning profile and psychosocial needs; he or she collects relevant information from school and / or external workers and parents, selects and uses appropriate tests, conducts interviews, and makes observations and data analysis as part of the determination of an intervention plan to meet the student's needs.
He / she participates with the multidisciplinary team in the development and revision of the student's intervention plan, incorporating, as appropriate, his / her action plan; he or she participates in the choice of objectives and means of intervention; he or she collaborates with other team members in coordinating and coordinating interventions and evaluating the achievement of objectives.
She or he participates with teachers in the development and implementation of strategies and projects to help students who are or are likely to have adjustment difficulties.
She or he accompanies and advises other school workers and parents of students with social maladjustments; he or she proposes strategies for intervening with these students and guides them in choosing attitudes and approaches to foster the development of desirable social behaviors and adaptive skills; he or she plans, organizes and facilitates training activities.
He or she plans, organizes and facilitates, in collaboration with other school or external interveners, activities with class groups or groups of students presenting common difficulties or particular problems.
She or he designs, adapts or develops materials based on the needs and abilities of students with adjustment difficulties.
She or he advises management staff, writes expert reports, appraisals, appraisals and progress reports and makes appropriate recommendations to support decision-making.
She or he advises and supports school workers in integrating students into regular classes; he or she proposes to them means of intervention or activities appropriate to the situation of the student.
He or she establishes and maintains collaboration and links with partner organizations; he or she contacts other stakeholders to obtain or provide advice and information; he or she can direct the student or his / her parents to resources appropriate to the situation and needs.
He or she may be called in to help defuse crisis or emergency situations and suggest possible solutions.
